Child custody and domestic violence: Tips for parents

When a relationship is defined by abuse, it can be very hard for the abused party to break free. A large part of domestic violence involves making the victim feel utterly powerless. When the victim is also a parent, things become even more complicated, as the parent is torn between wanting to protect their kids and fearing the ramifications that will come with leaving the relationship. Victims in Colorado who are facing a child custody battle against an abusive former partner have a difficult road ahead.

Act of domestic violence caught on GoPro camera

When an individual claims that he or she has been subjected to an act of domestic violence, it can be difficult to substantiate those claims in a Colorado court of law. Without any form of proof, the court is left to try and determine if the parties are telling the truth or giving false statements. This a problem, because many abusers are aware that they will likely face no consequences if the victim is unable to prove that the incident took place. For one man, the only way to capture the acts of domestic violence that he suffered at the hands of his estranged wife was to wear a body camera.

Domestic violence and divorce: Enough is enough

For many Colorado spouses, marriage has not proven to be all that one hoped and dreamed that it might be. Often, a situation can worsen in incremental amounts over a period of time, leaving a spouse completely shocked when an incident causes he or she to step back and evaluate the union. While there are a number of marital disappointments that can be addressed through hard work and counseling, domestic violence is an example of a fatal flaw within a marriage.
