Domestic violence allegations involve baseball's Addison Russell

Last October, Colorado baseball fans cheered after their team defeated the Cubs in a playoff game. What many may not have known is that one of the Cubs, Addison Russell, would be suspended on allegations of domestic violence. Though the accusations first surfaced in 2017, it was more than a year before officials with Major League Baseball took action.

Addison's former wife first made allegations of domestic abuse while the couple were still married. According to a social media comment, Melisa Reidy-Russell was a victim of both emotional and physical violence. Shortly after the allegations surfaced, MLB opened an investigation into the matter. His wife filed for a divorce shortly after the post and sought custody of the couple's son as well as financial support.

MLB never formally closed the investigation, though Russell continued to play for the Cubs. The couple's divorce was granted in August of 2018. Since officials never announced any findings nor subjected the athlete to any disciplinary measures, it was assumed that there was no credible evidence of any abuse. However, in September of 2018, his former wife shared her story on a blog post and then went on to speak about her abuse in interviews with a sports publication as well as a television station. Major League Baseball announced that Russell was suspended for 40 games and would have to abide by other requirements before being allowed back on the team.

There is speculation that Russell will play once the suspension has been served. Russell has acknowledged that he regrets his actions and is working to improve his behaviors. Most professional sports have established policies to address the matter of domestic violence in an effort to ensure that offenders are held accountable. Colorado residents who are dealing with this troubling issue may seek the assistance of an experienced attorney who can provide information on legal ways to seek protection for themselves and their children.
