NFL and players urged to take steps to condemn domestic violence

Recently, yet another National Football League player was arrested on allegations of abuse. This is not the first time Reuben Foster has had allegations of domestic violence associated with him. Though all states, including Colorado, have laws that are intended to protect victims and hold offenders accountable, there are some who are urging the NFL and the players to take a stronger stand.

The fact that another player has been accused of abusive actions is not the only reason there are calls for effective penalties. It's the fact Foster's team, The San Francisco 49ers, cut him based on those allegations and another team jumped at the chance to take him on. In spite of the league's own rule concerning personal conduct and what constitutes unacceptable behavior, the Washington Redskins defended picking Foster up by claiming that he will still have to go through certain steps before he is allowed to participate in any games.

Critics are claiming that Foster should not have been eligible to be picked up by any other teams until he completed the legal process. Instead, the NFL is seen as being too lenient with its own policies. There are calls now for the players themselves to revise their collective bargaining agreement that would stipulate that behavior such as domestic abuse will not be tolerated or overlooked regardless of a player's skills.

The NFL has demonstrated that it can enforce its policies by disciplining players who have been charged with DUI or other crimes. However, by selectively enforcing its rules concerning allegations of domestic violence, it is appearing to send the message that wins take precedence over the well-being of others. Charges of domestic violence are serious, and the accused are entitled to due process; however, victims should be assured of the right to their safety. Colorado residents who are facing this serious issue may seek information concerning legal measures to protect themselves and their loved ones.
