Tips for keeping a Colorado divorce on track

Ending a marriage is far more like a marathon than a sprint. Divorce is a process that has a distinct beginning, middle and end. Colorado spouses play an important role in keeping this process on track and can have a great deal of impact on the timeline of the overall process. The following tips can help spouses keep their divorce moving forward.

One of the most important things that a spouse can do is to realize the true role of his or her divorce attorney. Attorneys are advisors, there to guide clients through the multitude of decisions that must be made as a divorce moves forward. In the best cases, clients and attorneys form a team of sorts and work together toward the goal of a finalized divorce. If either side of that partnership is not keeping up with his or her responsibilities, the divorce can drag on far longer than necessary.

In order to be the best possible client, it's important to respond to the attorney's requests in a timely manner. This means remaining available and responsive throughout the process, which can stretch from a matter of months to more than a year, depending on the complexity of the case. A divorce can throw a wrench into one's normal schedule, but being flexible and accommodating will pay off in the form of a faster and often less expensive divorce.

It's helpful to take the time to prepare a written overview of the course of the marriage. This includes a brief summary of the personality traits of the other party. When a Colorado attorney has all of the facts about both the marriage and the other spouse, it becomes easier to structure a negotiation strategy and work toward a resolution of any sticking points for either side. When these guidelines are followed, spouses are taking an active role in the divorce process and can expect improved results.
