Divorce happening more among older individuals

Divorce can be a financially and emotionally challenging process in Colorado, especially for those who have been married for years or even decades. However, the divorce process can also be liberating for some individuals. Research shows that an increasing number of individuals in their 50s or older are opting to get divorced for a variety of reasons.

One of the main reasons that more divorces are happening among older individuals--mostly initiated by women--is that women today have been empowered and know how to get exactly what they desire. They have very high expectations for the quality of their emotional lives. Thus, they are increasingly willing to get out of unsatisfactory marriages either to be with other people or to enjoy the single life. Men are less likely to get divorced at an older age simply because they do not want to cause problems and, therefore, are willing to put up with situations that are not ideal.

Another reason it is not uncommon for divorce to happen later in life is that an older couple's kids are grown and are typically living their own lives. Therefore, there is no need to stay together for the sake of the kids. Even if adult children prefer for their parents to stay married, the parents do not feel as though the kids dictate the marital relationship's terms.

Appropriate legal guidance may help people going through divorce in Colorado to seek their best interests during this type of family law proceeding. This especially valuable when high-value assets or property are at stake. It is within the rights of both parties to pursue an outcome that is personally satisfactory while still considering the other party's needs.
